= Ricercares IV – Nigel Morgan

Ricercares IV

the concluding music of Ricercare IV.

.

The fourth and final Ricercare is a virtuoso toccata of whirling figures and lively rhythmic patterns
with the 2 trumpets and 2 trombones trading 16th note phrases. This movement demonstrates the contribution patterns of computer-generated dynamics and articulation can make to the musical outcome. The rhythmic material is entirely ‘hand-written’ using a kind of symbolic shorthand from a library devised by the composer.
The pitch material is contained in six collections of phrases that are put through a kind of ornament processor that produces the most effective appoggiaturas. These phrases are continually passed between pairs of instruments. The tonality of the music is based on whole-tone scales, the harmonic rhythm moving these scales up and down through cycles of fourths and fifths.
