The third Ricercare is a slow movement in 5/8 marked grazioso. Its three distinct sections feature in turn solo trombone, trumpet and tuba. Each solo part literally generates the ensemble’s accompaniment figures. Here the composer has assembled three almost identical programs of code, which required very little alteration to produce the generated outcome. The soloists’ white-noise material and its accompaniment is mapped to a sequence of pentatonic scales. This serves to bring a whole new quality and variety of sound to the ensemble.
