Four Commentaries III – What Happens Together

The title What Happens Together suggests not only harmony but the effect of simultaneity in a texture where the pitch relationships of the two instruments constantly change. There are many subtle moments of coming together that require imaginative dynamics and timing in ensemble playing.
In this scherzo movement there’s probably more variety in the juxtaposition of piano and cello and intensity of harmonic rhythm than in any of the other commentaries. Towards the end of the movement the opening phrase of the first commentary is heard clearly making upward harmonic progressions in the right hand of the piano part.
