Array – Perpetual

A Mandelbrot fractal.

A Mandelbrot fractal.

Perpetual imagines the violin as a set of small tuned drums. A Mandelbrot fractal and its mirror image, examined through sequence of magnifications, make up the material of the movement. All the parameters of the composition are generated from x and y outputs: pitch symbols from x, length symbols from y, then mirrored.
Dynamics are linked to note lengths. Perpetual and mechanistic movement, whilst present in the Baroque toccata, has become a feature of much instrumental music since the early 20C.
